5, 2003 — A total of 10 Denver police command officers are now
under internal investigation for apparent discrepancies between their police
work and off-duty police records, according to Denver Police Chief Gerry
Whitman.
Those 10 investigations began after a NEWS4 investigation of
three top police commanders collecting a second paycheck while on the job with
the city.
Last
month, a NEWS4 probe reported three top command officers in the Crimes Against
Persons Bureau were regularly working a lucrative secondary job in the middle of
the afternoon. These officers were allegedly routinely
leaving work in the middle of their shifts to earn extra money directing
traffic.
On dozens of days, they never
used accrued comp time to cover their time away from work.
Another lieutenant, Lt. Jon Priest, was coming to work early and leaving early to get to the crossing guard job. An internal affairs questionnaire was passed out to officers who work with the three top commanders..
